I've seen many of these types of machines, big and small. All the descriptions talk about the machine itself; what about the computer program used to run the machine. Is the drafting program on a PC? If so, what is the medium used to transfer it to the CNC machine? Or what other computer is used?
The machine is controlled with a pc running a program called mach-3. You can also control the machine with an open-source software called EMC2. The design work can be done in a number of CAD programs. Some good hobby CAD/CAM programs are made by Vectric. With the Vectric softwares, you can do your design work, and your machine toolpaths. Then you just save the toolpath as a g-code and open it up in mach-3 to run it.
The machine has 6" x 8" x 2.75" travels. The cost for the new model is $550 for the machine with the stepper motors. The new model is driven by kevlar reinforced urethane timing belts and has 800 inches per minute rapids. It runs on preloaded bearings so there is no slop.
