Excerpt from the romantic light comedy, Crossing Delancey which stars dreamer and pretender, Izzy (Isabelle Grossman played by actress, Amy Irving).

When Izzy learned that Sam Posner (actor, Peter Reigert) owned a pickle shop on the Lower East Side, she had already made up her mind that she wasn't interested at all, even when they were introduced. Her friend, Marilyn Cohen (The Roches own Suzzy Roche) on the other hand was willing to give Sam a try. So Izzy arranges a date for them to meet, except that Sam doesn't know about their hidden agenda.

*Sigh!* Poor Izzy.... When will she ever learn....

This scene parallels the scene between Izzy and Anton after The Cave Dweller reading.* In both scenes, they were in an eating establishment, and in both scenes, they're with one other woman which each man ends up with. It is also in both scenes where Izzy begins to grasp the truth about each man and each scene is a turning point in her feelings toward each.

Other Characters:
Amy (actress, Deborah Offner)
Mickey Posner (actor, Michael Ornstein)
Handball Champ (actor, Sam Corsi)

Favorite Quote
Sam: And I said, "Yes, Mrs. Mandelbaum, this one I'll meet."

Points of Interest

1.) Suzzy Roche who plays Marilyn in this scene is part of The Roches, a musical trio of sisters. Many of the songs that play during the scenes in Crossing Delancey had been written and/or performed by them:

"Come Softly to Me"
"Pounding"
"Nocturne"
"Lucky" (My favorite!!!)

The Roche sisters are great! They are off-beat, deep and don't take themselves too seriously. They might not be household names, but they've accomplished much. Check out The Roches on their website:

2.) The sweet piano solo that was playing when Izzy meets Sam by the handball courts is called "Portrait of Izzy" by Paul Chihara. He wrote all the instrumental music for Crossing Delancey.

  • I love this movie and Peter Riegert is cute - but his voice! He sounds like Gilbert Gottfried. Izzy's friend is so unattractive. She's chowing on chips while trying to make a first impression. Ugh.

@MelodyOfVision Can you post the entire film? It's hard to find! :)

  • @DickieAnginson - *LOL* on the Gilbert Gottfried voice - I never thought of it that way! Peter Riegert is so handsome that even his voice sounds handsome to me. :o)

I like the Marilyn Cohen character too - I think she was just stuck in an uncomfortable situation. So what do you do in an uncomfortable situation? You eat chips!

I can't post the whole film - I'll get shut down. You may want to write to YouTube to get them to work with the owners to provide it free or for rent at a low cost.

  • This was filmed at Lucy's Mexican restaurant on Columbus Avenue and 84th st. That's my old neighborhood. It was the first restaurant in the wave of gentrification. It's long gone.

  • @rootedsorrow - Thank you so much for the info! I tried to track down as many of the restaurants in this movie as I could. All gone as you say. :o( The only eatery from the movie still around is Papaya King which can be seen on the "Songs for Izzy's Birthday" clip (watch?v=jF6gr3tdbmM).

  • I agee. One of my favorites of all time...I would run away with Riegert.

  • This is one of the greatest scenes in the history of movies.

Riegert shows himself to be in the same acting league as Spencer Tracy. You can't see that he's acting. Sam becomes real.

I never get tired of this film.

  • I remember this movie, I always thought Amy Irving was a pretty girl, It was a nice sweet easy going movie, I wanna watch it now

  • Suzzy Roche's acting is so natural in these scenes.

  • The great thing about this movie is how the characters love OTHER people (the older, the un-sexy) in their lives, not just each other.

  • Been in love with Suzzy ever since I saw this as a child. My mother took me to see Crossing Delancey on a double bill and I was like, 'Wow a chick who loves baseball!' Little did I realize as I got older, it wouldn't be as true!

  • Wow- realized that Suzzy Roche of the music group is the actress - top notch recording artist and top notch actress - not bad. The Roches music is so perfect in this movie.

  • @csanant1 And I with Ms.Irving,she is so gorgeous.
