Back in VA , warming up with ULI ROTH ! Just got in from LA. (1992) and came back to wail at a concert in colledge park MD. and challenged to play Sails by Lasky . Uli was back in the 70's and still today a guitar player's guitarist , He has a certain phraseing dynamics and communication that fuses Blues ,classical and rock guitar God virtue that comes across just outstanding and sets Him apart and in his own league with his " Holy " Tone that many have tried to imatate but few have mastered ! As you can see I am plugged straight into a 30 watt marshall and the tone is in my Hands and ofcourse I build amazing guitars tailor made for clear ringing bell like tones ! This song is credited for starting the whole Genre of music called Neoclassical ! Uli being the king of tonality for Lead guitar in rock guitar in the 70's but that is not to say that Ritchie Blackmore is not 1 of the greatest of all time because certainly , His contribution to guitar solo's is a great place to start considering what a great rock guitar solo is all about ! Yngwie is his most famous imatator and allthough Yngwie was faster and more animal than Uli He has yet to out do , in my humble opinion , the pure communication and story teller quality that Uli does and that quite dramatically in this guitar solo arrangement ! The closest thing malmstein has done in classic greatness is far beyond the sun and that is right up there especially since Malmstein's band has got a better drummer but No vocals like Klaus to convince it being an instumental !

  • wow....strange fingering on the intro solo. do you do that for tone, picking, or all the above?

  • I dunno sounded like that was a good place to play it so yeah I learned it way back in the 77 but no one showed me so I figured that's where he played it !

  • Are you picking every note?

  • absolutely ?! Bluegrass technique or flatpicking , alternate-up and down etc..

  • Great job man, don't get me wrong, you've got the skill, but you dig way too furiusly into those strings, also it seems you are rushing it a little, so it makes it sound unnatural. Tone is also great for this song. Cheers

  • no I think the harder you pick the more aggressive the better that way you can clean up your tone on the amp and play with natural distortion not over saturated distortion or too much gain like most neoclassical players talk about unnatural they overuse distortion and their picking is weak and their sound doesnt cut through - no thanks dude ! I pick with extra heavy picks 1.26 millimeter clatons and I can play any guitar thru any amp and kick serious butt with my aggressive picking technique .

  • Their was a guy in my neiborhood Alan Schwartz and He was the best electric lead guitar player in the world I swear I am not lying - He never made it and I dont know what happened to Him but He had a nasty picking hand and He told me to alternate pick every note and try to make it so the tone of each note is pure and heavy so that's what I did .

  • That is amazing. I bet even Uli Roth couldn't do this picking every note.

  • @SKARKIBANEZ *80s? Nobody sounded like this in the 80s.Uli roth was hardly even known in the USA during 80s..There was a short lived faze for him in 85 with astral wind but it failed because the 80s was nerdy preppy and anti anything with feeling psychedelic or especially heavy metal shit..That changed in the late 80s and the bands that are big today where hated in mid 80s like metallica was underground in 80s up until the end of the late 80s..Even though they sold albums world wide this is 77?

  • great

  • FFFUCK YEAH 80'S MOOD.......
