While filming and biking Route 66 with a group of 25 cyclists, I was set up to tackle the Big Texan's 72 oz Steak Challenge. If you eat the entire meal in under 1 hour it's free (a $75 value). Everyone gets an ugly t-shirt and a beer glass I think. They say that in winter, 8 or so people attempt it per night, in summer, more like 20. A nice little cash cow, as it were! The skinniest little runts tend to do best - which is why I was put up to it. However, it's a tough piece of top sirloin so unless you're a human mincer it's very hard to do - and not that pleasant. If it was rib eye I am sure they'd go broke. Leftovers must be boxed and eaten outside.
This unedited clip is for the amusement of the 40 cyclists on the trip - it's not Sundance but thanks for watching anyway.
See http://www.galfromdownunder.com/route66 for more about the trip and how to get hold of the 57 minute DVD (of the whole trip, not just the steak!)

  • holy crap in england the biggest steak challenge they will do is 42oz :O

  • Maybe it's even tougher than the top sirloin this place use, but I can't imagine it. It's probably got a PVC core :o)

  • So, was it a good steak. . . tough tender. . . good taste, prepared nice. . . . please comment. I'm planning to go to Texas to try this challenge next summer.

    Please comment,

    Best Regards,

    vp

  • None of the above! I put this information in the video description - let me know if you need more info - it's self explanatory. I'd rather spend half the money on a really decent steak - this is something I only did for a laugh and it was at the bike tour leader Lon Haldeman's insistence!

  • But then they dry age it so it should be soft and tender.

  • Are you kidding? Soft and tender would mean they'd have to give you back your $75 because everyone would finish it. This is purely a fun marketing tactic. The idea is to take as many lots of $75 they can each night and leave you with something to write home about. They aren't stupid. They leave that for the rest of us :o)

  • I hate americans!.....Not in a bad way though...I am just jealous that we here in the uk can't get anything like this at all.......Lucky fuckers lol...We have a 42oz which i have ate but that's it...our service for food is weak...AAAGGGHHHRRR it pisses me off...If i wan't a heart attack then let me have one!

  • Damn, after a 120 mile bike ride I would inhale that thing

  • As Bobby Lee said, "It's only 4.5 lbs. of beef that your colon is going to be hit with. Enjoy it."

  • A good tip - cut it small and take your time. Bring a knife sharpener because the knives are not sharp. Dont try to eat it fast, a good workout in the gym a few hours before and you will benefit well from the protien. I'm doing it again next time I go there!

  • that just made me really hungry!
