UNC-CSI is a co-sponsor of a regional Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) competiton. UNC-CSI encourages and assists local schools to take part in this mission-based competition overseen by the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center. Students design and build ROVs specifically to complete a series of underwater missions. Teams are judged on their water-based missions, engineering reviews, technical reports and poster displays. The contest fosters student interest in math and science while providing a fun and challenging competitive atmosphere. The focus of the 2009 competition was on the use of ROVs in underwater submarine rescue operations. First First Flight High School, from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina won the Mid-Atlantic Regional ROV Competition and will continuing onto the MATE International ROV Competition to be held in the end of June in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.
