Read the translation in English:
Castel San Pietro Romano

NARRATOR: FILM EXTRA

Tradition says that St. Peter came here to preach Christianity, and to honour that tradition, the town was called Castel San Pietro Romano.

Filmmakers chose Castello because its mayor was Adolfo Porry Pastorel, one of the first Italian photo reporters. He met a director friend, who told him he was looking for a small, slightly run down town to shoot a film. Pastorel answered that there was no town more run down than the one where he was mayor and he invited the director to see for himself. The movie people came, they liked the town and chose it as a location for their film.

RESTAURANTEUR

I didn't even have tables back then, I only had two or three, I started off with nothing. They came here and said 80,000 lire ... who had ever seen that amount of money before? There were two men, later I found out that it was the director Comencini and his brother. Comencini was a robust sort of guy, though not overly so, pretty normal really.

NARRATOR: FILM EXTRA

This square was the centre of the town, everything went on here, there were various scenes shot here. In the film it where the midwife lived, a role played by Marisa Merlini, and so she looked out from here when people came to call her.

RESTAURANTEUR

Marisa Merlini was very vulgar Roman who would shout orders at me: "Margherita, when are you going to bring my bruschetta? Hurry up, I'm hungry". She came back here after 50 years and they were all locals, when they celebrated the lunch and the baptism.

NARRATOR: FILM EXTRA

I took part in some scenes set in the church, I was one of the group of girls who formed the parish choir.

People who want to see the places featured in "Bread, Love and Dreams / Pane, amore and fantasia" will find them still here, exactly as they were then.
