If the Winklevoss twins knew that their campus website would be the basis for what's now known as the world's leading social networking site, they probably would have registered their idea. Yet as the Oscar nominated film The Social Network has shown us, Intellectual property rights were not on their minds when they commissioned Mark Zuckerburg to design their original Harvard campus website, which we now know was a $65 billion dollar mistake. ABN's Natascha Jacobz spoke to Spoor & Fisher's IP specialist, Marco van der Merwe to give some insight into the world of Intellectual Property.
IN my opinion, there are 3 values related to intellectual property laws:
1. Scarcity of the world is not of time nor energy but of mutual solutions. There are 2 kinds of people or entities that deserve rewards; firstly the creators of solutions, secondly those who share the solutions.
2. Some products are not shared to the public, therefore they are private in nature.
3. Some products reflect the identity of their creators, and others might use them in the way that misrepresent the identity.
