Our purification is an absolute requirement, as Hebrews 12:14 states that we must strive "for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord." The Church teaches that when we die, we undergo what is called the particular, or individual judgment. While we may die with our mortal sins forgiven, there can be many impurities in us, specially venial sins and the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven.What would better prepare us for the beatific vision than the awareness of the tremendous gap between our sinfulness and the holiness of God? That realization is what can transform a sinner into a saint - the very reason for the existence of purgatory. Oct. 22, 2011 12:40AM
