lousy, this man shouldn't be teaching sword :/

Completly wrong, you have to lower the sword when blocking, so both your shoulder and arm and head is protected. Do not lift your arm up so high when holding the sword. Then with a kesa-geri uke can cut your arm and shoulder. Beside that, it its not a block in the classical meaning of a block. Nishio Sensei always told not to block, but to hold your sword in a position where you are absorbing the opponent attack, so his sword will slide down along your sword without any hard confrontaion.

very nice explanation of the smaller details of this block

Nice video. I love Nishio Sensei teachings. My sensei in england used to teach a lot too.
I myself have also used it to demonstrate the relation from ken-jitsu to tai-jitsu with beginners.
Thanks for posting.
I don't know who this guy is, or whether he ever practiced in Japan with Nishio Sensei or with any of the old senior students from the Tokyo/Yokohama area who were practicing with Sensei for years. I don't know if he listened to the sound or not. His explanation is more for a regular block and not for this type of block while the sword is drawn. His comment has nothing to do with Shihonage as Nishio Sensei executed it while I practiced with him. Oh Well. If this video helps you, GREAT!!
