Zauberflöte Series:

Bored, can't sleep...its 2:23 in the morning. Suffering from my periodic insomnia again. I'm going to post some more from the 1991 Met production of Zauberflöte.

Scene 9, Act 2. The three boys convince Pamina not to run her mother's dagger through her chest. Pamina is scooped by Kathleen Battle (haha). The three boys are Ted Huffman, Benjamin Schott, and Per-Christian Brevig.

Thank you very much to Mr. Battalionchief for clearing this up for me. Quote:
'So far as I know, they always stand as boy number one from the left. And I know for sure that the boy to the left (in the beginning) is Ted Huffman. ( According to BCSD - The Boy Choir & Soloist Directory.) They talk about Benjamin Schott as boy number two (in the middle.) So, boy number three must be Per-Christian Brevig.' Thanks again.

Usually of course, the 3 boys are sung by members of the fantastic Tölzer Knabenchor...this time, they are American. Suprisingly good (for Americans).

  • Heart warming :) How did they manage to get those treble voices to the back of the Met!? Lol

  • I have no idea...I wonder if they have amplification.

  • they may have been miked, and Battle as well. It's said that if you have a solid technique and focus the voice, you can be heard, but I have played her with Realtek a software, and her voice is pretty, but very very very small.

  • There are amps at the Met, no doubt. Almost every singer 'cheats' these days.

  • Act 9??? Zauberflote has only 2 acts!

    Great vid!!!

  • Sorry, scene 9...dumb me, got mixed up. I was sleepy.

  • @GermanOperaSinger And you have proof of that? The Met had to install sound system for Dr Atomic because the composer insisted on it; before that they didn't even have one at all - Met speakers are public address speakers in the ceiling, not suitable for music or aren't you aware that mics aren't enough one needs speakers too.. Do you know how much work it takes on Broadway to get the sound right? Doing it in secret is impossible.

  • Who are the people who post these silly, mean-spirited comments? There's no amplification at the Met. Battle's voice is *moderately* small (so is Bartoli's), but neither of them ever had the slightest problem making themselves heard at the Met. If you had ever been there, you would know that the Met has excellent acoustics.

These boys could be heard quite well, also. They're fabulous. Mozart was amazing.

  • i was wondering if it was going to Gouge its own eye out there…

  • I CANT HEAR THE SECOND SPIRIT AND IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE. I NEED TO LEARN IT. :(

  • @GermanOperaSinger no they don't..its all on there own...

  • Yup, there is amplification at the met. It's called a well built opera house with acoustics in mind.... That's all. It is built for singers. There are tricks in building to help amplification, but beyond that... there is nothing else.

  • Perhaps the difficultest part for the three boys.

That posting with Battle is absolutely great!

  • For the last time. The Metropolitan Opera DOES. NOT. AMPLIFY/MIC or use speakers in ANYWAY. It's called ACOUSTICS, Learn it. Live it. Love it. sheesh.

  • Need I say more? It's beautiful!
