The ANIMALS are two different names, and species. The first verse is from the Yukon area, which is the Tree Squirl. And the second verse is the Artic Ground Squirl. THis song is so old, no one really knows where the song came from. Lots of elders have heard of it, but don't know where it is from.

I was asked recently to play some Yupik music at a community puppet theater. The story is one about a giant who kidnaps children, who are later rescued by animals: a bird with strong wings and a crane with long legs. Has anyone heard of this? The show is about both the Yupik and Inuit people and I don't know if the story of the hungry giant is Yupik or Inuit. Can someone please direct me to a good source for traditional folk songs, with words printed in English? Thank you! This is a lovely song.
