Surprised that nobody has mentioned that the song is about being in prison (although maybe only a metaphor....). When I was living in Britain, my English friends pointed it out to me. Being "on the inside" is British slang for being in jail. Seemed to be pretty well known to them that Ian had that in mind. Makes the lyrics even more interesting in my opinion, just another layer of nuance, and why Tull is still my favorite band.

I've just watched the 'history of' DVD. Excellent, but a bit sad to see how they splintered around this era. They had such a great mix of jazz, blues - and the rest at that time. I switched off them a bit around and after Aqualung. The new direction seemed too commercial and basic - musically.

I heard this in a noisy Student Union bar in 1970. I could tell it was Jethro Tull but could not hear any words so I could not identify the title. The tune has buzzed round my head on and off for 40 years and with the help of YouTube I was finally able to identify the song.
You could say that this tune has been the sound track of my life.

....para mí "BENEFIT", junto a "AQUALUNG" y "THICK AS A...", constituye una trilogía
insuperable de este grupo, por la calidad armónica, melódica y poética, que me contagió
en la dorada década de los '70.
