    This movie was probably based mostly on the case of Burke & Hare, two body snatchers in Edinburgh in the 1820s and 1830s who did basically what James said Karloff's character did; steal bodies and sell them to doctors.

    That's actually a bit of a mystery to this day. There are tonnes of conflicting stories about whether Karloff and Lugosi were friends or rivals when it came to their films. But most point to them at least getting along when working together (though apparently Karloff's very British insistence on afternoon teabreaks got on Lugosi's nerves)
