The "champ de pixels" display at the Place Des Festivals, Quartier des Spectacles, Montreal, Canada.

Concept by Jean Beaudoin and Erick Villeneuve. Produced by Multimedia Novalux.

For more information, please visit http://pixels.nexun.ca .

This is an improvised piece I've created from footage of the area. The background music is part of the display.

Recorded on December 14, 2009 with a Canon Vixia HF200 high definition camcorder. Tv mode, 1/30 shutter speed, auto exposure, built-in microphone.

  • Is that every year in Montreal? Also where in Montreal?

  • This was a first-time event held at the recently completed Place Des Festivals area right next to the Contemporary Art Museum, corner St-Catherine Street West and Jeanne-Mance Street.

  • It seems that the Vixia and the EU version have some differences in setup, I do not have the 1/30 shutter speed setting but 1/25 in TV mode and in all other modes where I can change the exposure manually!

  • This is normal. The European TV system displays 50 images per second while the North American TV system displays 60 images per second.

Technically, digital camcorders should be able to support ALL popular frame rates, but they're always adjusted to be as compatible as possible to the local TV system, probably so the manufacturers don't receive a ton of support calls from people saying they can't see the picture on their TVs. :)
