Singer Nate Dogg, whose voice anchored some of rap's most fabulous songs and helped define the sound of West coast hip-hop, has died at age 41.

Attorney Mark Geragos said Nate Dogg, whose real name was Nathaniel D. Hale, died Tuesday of complications from multiple strokes. Born Nathaniel Dawayne Hale on December 31, 1969, in Long Beach, CA; son of Daniel Lee Hale (a minister).

Nate Began his singing career in a gospel choir of New Hope Trinity Baptist church in Clarksdale, MS, joined the U.S. Marines at age 16, added vocals to Dr. Dre's album The Chronic, 1992; with Warren G, released hit single "Regulate," 1994; contributed vocals to hundreds of rap and R&B releases, 1990s-2000s; released his first solo album, G-Funk Classics Vol. 1 & 2, 1998; released solo album Music & Me on Elektra, 2001; with Snoop Dogg and Warren G as the super group 213, released The Hard Way, 2004.

Nate Dogg wasn't just a rapper, but he was an integral figure in the genre: His deep voice wasn't particularly melodic, but its tone — at times menacing, at times playful, yet always charming — provided just the right touch on hits including 50 Cent's "21 Questions," Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode" and countless others.

Nate Dogg, who had suffered strokes in recent years, also put out his own solo projects but was best known for his collaborations with others

Like many rappers, Nate had legal problems in the past, despite his previous legal troubles, Nate Dogg has remained one of rap music's most sought-after vocalists and even lent his talents to cinema with a part in Chris Rock's film Head of State.
