Here's a demonstration of "the snap" -- a traditional shortcut for cutting tenons in timber framing. Make one shoulder cut. Roll the timber twice. Saw the end of tenon cut down to the depth of the bottom of the tenon. Smack the waste with a mallet or the poll of an axe. You've just split one cheek and avoided cutting the encut full depth.
