Strange but true: I first viewed this clip in 2007, I think. It had such an effect on me that I actually moved to Ireland from the US and am now studying uilleann pipes in Dublin. I suppose it's true that if you want what they have, you have to go where they go and do what they do. Thanks, peabodyharris for your single post on youtube that changed my life in a big, big way.

The uilleann pipes are a bewitching thing....I don't think any other instrument stirs up the primal soul like the pipes..I understand your capture.

I was talking about his drone reeds, still, you're right. He was said to not have touched his drone reeds for years! Probably contributed to the tuning issues. I also heard when they were replaced they were black and grimy, from age and being stained with nicotine. Probably helped how he got his unique drone sound.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think his chanter mounts were also stained with nicotine, as they were much more yellowed than the other mounts.

Such is the capture of our small island and why we try to keep it - the ppipes are a testiment to our heart and sing what we can't say - our language isn't understood abroad and as bearla our song won't sound the same - if your heart is true - Ireland is your restplace

Are you implying this instrument is stupid, or?

The oldest known uilleann "chanter" (melody pipe) double-reed is in S. Australia, plays great and is far older, dates from Moby Dick days, before this pipe was built. Reeds don't vibrate to death, demonstrably not as soon as in 1 or 2 centuries. They warp due to humidity and the mysteries of plant genetics, growth soils and such.

If you're into the technicals, that's not all. The U.P. nearly died out in the 20th century. Good instruments and good reeds were very difficult to find at times except in a few places and with personal connections. It's much better now. I build this instrument and played the Highlands to advanced amateur standards; I feel the piper is much better than parts of his instrument. But listen to Highland records of this era, even top bands had serious problems.
