I do not like to compare, and Ray Brown is fantastic, but? NHÖP!!

NHOP looks almost asleep, he is so relaxed when he plays. I think he is the only one not sweating up there. All of em, the greatest ever!

And another thing: to say that NHOP couldn't swing is SO wrong - he practically grew up in a jazz club. Check out the video here on YT where he's playing with the great Bud Powell - at the age of 16! (Anthropology - v=TaSDinL6pC8)

Is it so hard to fathom that you can play jazz if you aren't black? I think that If NHOP were black there wouldn't be any arguing. It's called racism. NHOP makes Ray sound like a sloppy old man.

@SlikkTim I fully agree with you that ray swings much harder than NHOP, however, i don't think it's at all accurate to describe any video of NHOP playing as "how not to play double bass". as everyone knows, NHOP was a true virtuoso on his instrument, and fantastic musician, as is evidenced by all the recordings and gigs he did with many of the worlds greatest jazz musicians. Also, let's be honest, there are very few bass players ever who would be able to stand next to ray's beat!

I was at this concert and remember drinking a beer and chatting with NHOP just after the concert at the Festival's musicians' bar... Great moment ! The giants were on the earth in those days... ;-)
