  • Your not always supposed to have your hads low, you have to give the horse its mouth so it can jump, but then again your not supposed to give it a free rein either, it should be in the middle.

  • I have another one- keep your shoulders back when approaching the jump and don't lean forward until your horse jumps. Otherwise, if you're leaning forward and your horse decides to refuse the jumps, you'll be more likely to fall off than if you are keeping your shoulders back. xD

  • @laragrove75 my riding instructor trains horses for the grand prix and is not rubbish

  • @1002Lollipop

Well, no offence, your instructor is rubbish. Everyone i know is taught to use their voice, it encourages the ponies. They don't neccessarily understand and will canter when you say canter, but using a firm voice does help with impulsion :)

  • adjust yourself and striding, and sometimes riders lean to a side to catch the lead, its necessary when you get higher bcuz of tighter turns and more demanding courses. Obviously not falling over leaning but still. Other than that I agree. Just felt you were contradicting yourself at some points :/

  • Actually, keeping your hands low interferes with the horse, so in someways you were contradicting yourself. You need to have them up the neck, giving the horse his head and neck so he can stretch esspec. after a tough take off.

I wouldnt always say set up a bar at the side, because you wont have that at a show. Use your aids to push him to the side he didnt veer off to, keep him between the aids.

Also, you actually should look at the fence as you are approaching in order to judge distance and

  • Easier said than done...

  • i need to remember to stand up in my stirrups lol!

  • @Swimmergirl3618 ok :)

  • @1002Lollipop In some cases it is, but if a horse hears a word with an action on a consistent basis, they will make a connection between the word and the action. The horse I ride has heard me say trot and canter half a million times but he has no idea whats going on XD

  • HEELS DOWN!!!

  • I have another- Never whip or beat a horse if it refuses. It can cause a horse to be afraid or dislike jumping.
