There are a lot of good "tricks" that you can use for multiplication of values within a certain range.. The reason why most of them are never taught in school is because they are applicable in such a small range. I have seen dozens of tricks to multiply lower ranges like this one.. But they all fail once you start going up. As for the zero in the middle? that will cause problems..

ermz.. not too sure.. haven tried it myself for such huge numbers.. will be kinda confusing i think..

Not really, I mean, when you get into the higher 3 digit numbers, and 4+ digit numbers, it does, but not for simple 2 digit problems and low 3 digit. It does start taking a bit of space when you have numbers like 5-9. Also, I wonder how the number 10 would work... I mean, how would you draw a zero? what about somethign like 101? do you just not draw any lines?
