Appalachian Spring Ballet - Martha Graham - Merce Cunningham - Aaron Copland

In 1944, Martha Graham's ballet was filmed in 16mm with the original cast, as a reference tool. Unfortunately, it was shot without sound, and as far as I know no one has attempted to add the score...

Good job. If I were doing this restoration, I would use the original 13 instrument version of Copland's music. This was what was heard in the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress when Martha Graham first performed this work. IMHO the original is far superior in every way to the much more frequently heard orchestral version.

I used the recording from the 1958 television ballet, which used the original 13-piece chamber version.

I highly recommend fans of this piece to take a listen to the NPR discussion on it. You can find it online. The chord Copland used is so emminently gorgeous.

Wonderful, thanks for posting this.

I've been listening to Copland's music for 50 years and this is the first time I've seen the ballet. I love it.
