That's a beautiful lyric for sure - though Waits' lyrics are littered with beauty. If I had to pick, I'd probably say that the song "Time" has the most beautiful poetry of Waits' songs. Just a sample:

"So put a candle in the window

And a kiss upon his lips

Till the dish outside the window fills with rain

Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart

Pay the fiddler off till i come back again..."

he started off playing jazz and i guess he's carried on with that over the rest of his life, but he plays a million different styles at once, don't know what you'd call it, he mixes up folk, country, jazz, blues, rock, 'bar room', south/central american styles, and others .. it's just 'tom waits music' haha
