Part 1 of Sidney Lumet's "The Hill". Over on itv gold 2 now, you can see a rare screening of "Slade in Flame", part of the channel's "Iconic Seventies Cinema" season. Meanwhile, here on itv gold 1, our first "Best of British" presentation following our break stars Sean Connery (taking a break from Bond), Harry Andrews, Ian Bannen and Alfred Lynch in a tough WWII prison drama, directed by Sidney Lumet ("Dog Day Afternoon", "Network", "Equus" et al.), "The Hill".
@shanghaibenny2 i was wondering about that! the camera seems to float over the fence as though on a balloon. a brilliant film maker.

@shanghaibenny2 Yes, filmaking was real magic then. I work in the business as a sound recordist and my personal opinion, judging by the rocking cam motion, is that it was actually suspended on some kind of balloon, as you cleverly suggested. Those were the days of creativity and ingenuity...

As usual Harry Andrews steals the film!

An incredibly effective opening shot. Was the camera perched on a boom or held by a balloon? Superb photography and acting, all of it.

Always loved this film. Completely over the top, completely believable. Some of my favourite actors doing their best or near to best work. Could anything this direct be made today? Bravo itvgold!

I remember seeing this when it came out - totally petrifying, fascinating, moving and thought provoking. Very 1965 ! Thanks.
