@alanheath let me tell u something/////////////////////////////this film without a doubt was the best film ...when it comes to bogart.....and i have seeeeeeen them all ! hell of an actor...he was at his best in this....8 yrs b4 his death ...48 yrs old or so...and yes....in HIS prime....ps. great movie also...not to mention that fella who won best supportin actor and died 2 yrs later...im 43, born in 68, ya young but no movie illiterate....thank god for the true first greats male or female!
@doctornoooo I can't agree with you on Bogart overplaying his nuttiness. I think that this was the best role he ever played - he really seems to be neurotic through greed.

I agree, Tim Holt was excellent. Much like a guy yo u would meet in county jail
after a bar fight... he expressed pain and remorse with a believable tone.
Great American film.

I have always felt that Tim Holt gave the most natural performance in this great film.
Bogart overplayed his nuttiness and Walter chewed the scenery somewhat occasionally. But Holt was absolutely believable in every line: he was a fine
...no make that unusually fine actor. Even in My Darling Clementine he was
the same, just damned good, always so believable. Orson Welles said he
was the most unusual actor he ever worked with.
