After the terrible fight in Hogwarts castle, many gather to the hospital wing to see what became of their friends and family. In addition to the serious wounds some of them sustained, they all ache from Dumbledore's death and Snape's shocking role in it. As all this is happening, Fawkes sings a lament which somehow gives voice to their sorrow and yet also comforts them. This inspired my piece "Mourning Phoenix."
I'm musically literate, but we're in the same boat--how do you make otherworldly music with instruments from this world?

Yeah, J.K. Rowling did an amazing job describing the music. It was musically inspiring and I didn't expect that at all. And then the profound pain I felt reading about Dumbledore's death--I couldn't think or sleep well until I wrote about it.

Hey no problem. I too am captivated and also curious with the phoenix musical cry. That's why the Phoenix Lament is one of my favourite chapters in the book. The way she describes the cry is fascinating.
Harp and very light ( atmospheric) ochrestral stuff. And of course the sound of the phoenix itself. It must be beautiful at the same time scarily otherworldly. I am not sure how to achieve that, Im musically illiterate you see.

Thanks for the comment. I love the harp.
I think harp and bells would work better for what I'm trying to do with "Fawkes' First Lament." Too bad I don't know how to play the harp.
I eventually want an orchestral arrangement of "Mourning Phoenix." I really want some rich cellos playing very richly and emotionally, like musical crying.
