Edison Blue Amberol #5648 - I'm Wild About Horns on Automobiles

Edison Blue Amberol cylinder record #5648 - Jack Dalton and the 7 Blue Babies singing "I'm Wild About Horns on Automobiles that Go Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta". This very rare recording was released in February 1929 - less than 9 months before Edison shut down his entire phonograph business. Less than 100 of this cylinder were ever made, and far fewer survived. By 1929, Edison was using electrical recording methods, direct to Diamond Disc. He would release a handful of new titles on cylinder records by dubbing acoustically.

Edison replaced the brittle wax used in his 4-minute "Amberol" cylinders with a celluloid-based "Blue Amberol" in 1912. On a properly-maintained machine, with a good diamond stylus, you can play these records hundreds of times with no apparent wear or degradation in quality. As you can see in this video, Edison's cylinder machines were all "linear tracking" with the stylus (or, in the case of this Opera machine, the record itself) moving across a feedscrew that is timed with the record groove.
