Ah, don't wear shorts when fencing :)
And yes, fencing, with FIE equipment, if you want to be committed to the sport and compete as private club members instead of just school club members are pretty expensive. I know I spent thousands of dollars on new swords (i personally used bf. much sturdier.) and helmets, lame, chest protector, knickers, etc.

I make my beginning fencers wear full kit in lessons because I like to hit them if they don't parry properly. The advanced people can do lessons in t-shirts.
