Journalists and protesters in Minneapolis held a press conference on August 28 decrying what they say is a trend: Local police targeting citizen journalists and artists in the weeks preceding the Republican National Convention. A police brutality watchdog was beaten by cops, he says, and his video camera was smashed. The members of the Glass Bead Collective were detained and their video gear confiscated, although no charges were filed. And a KSTP reporter was shoved into an elevator by police when he was trying to cover a sit-in at a HUD office.

Produced by Paul Schmelzer for the Minnesota Independent.

  • Frequently, the people at protests who engage in property damage are actually agent provocateurs.

The mainstream media has been consolidated to such an extreme that we can not count on it. We need independent journalists to document and show us what is happening. Indymedia is the only real media we have in this country anymore. That is why you're seeing this crack down. No media = no light, and corporate criminals love the dark.

  • The man in this clip claims the whole country is watching. He is correct. As far as I'm concerned these guys are not journalists. I've seen their website and their clips on websites. It could be argued that these guys help facilitate these Anarchists that are ripping down the city. Get real jobs reporting for a legitimate news organization!
