A Severe Thunderstorm with winds to 60 mph comes through, with a shelf cloud in the lead. There was just a little lightning, and the thunder was difficult to hear due to the wind and precip. The Bow Echo was about 75-100 miles long, and was a rare early January event, fueled by warm air ahead of a cold front, and a cold core upper low just to the west. Hail, wind damage and street flooding was reported with the line.

  • You also need to keep in mind that the hardwood trees were without leaves, due to winter, which will also lessen the effect of the wind.

  • The peak gusts was 60 mph, at the video location. Trees don't snap off all over the place here, with just a 60 mph. There is a lot to take into account, like how soft the ground is, or dry, which may cause trees to become weak. The frequency of strong wind producing storms, which will obviously clean out the weaker, more susceptible trees, if they occur fairly frequently. There were some large branches and smaller trees down in the immediate vicinity, but nothing major.

  • No thunder or lightning? For this to be a severe storm, you need to have high wind(none here)hail(again none)

or very frequent lightning(saw none)It was a rather lightweight downburst. I've seen some that would have leveled 80% of the trees seen in the back ground. No damage was evident here.

  • No true, this storm contained winds to 60 mph, and a warning was issued as a result. There was very little lightning, and it was difficult to hear the few claps of thunder with the wind. A storm becomes severe when it produces winds in excess of 58 mph, even if there is no hail or vivid lightning. It was by no means a monster storm, but it was severe.

  • That was a svr storm imo...winds did gust to 60mph at least...it only takes 58mph....you don't need lightning either. Love the video!!!!

  • It's always enjoyable to watch storms like this when you're inside - not so much if you're caught outside, though.

  • Living in Colorado we get severe thunderstorms in June and July, but I could probably count off on one hand the number of times I have seen storms like this! Insanity!!

LOL, and it is so weird, to me, to see a thunderstorm video with Christmas lights hanging on the porch railing! HA HA HA. If I made a weather video during Christmas season, it would be of a blizzard!

  • baarish.... but in english rain. i love rain but htere is no rian in karachi......
