On this Father's Day, Let us not forget the teen fathers...
There are 24 million children growing up without their dad in the United States today, and the percentage of children living in father-absent homes has more than tripled in the past 40 years. Teens living in single-parent households are more likely to be poor, more likely to go to jail, and more likely to have children as teenagers. Poor school performance and high drop out rates are common among teen parents. Boys who drop out of high school are more likely to father children as teenagers. More effort is needed to stop these statistics. Young men need to know that help is out there... This is just one sample of a successful Teen Fathers Program in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
From 2007-2010, Close to 120 teen fathers in the City of Bridgeport, CT, have participated in the free, voluntary program focused on fatherhood preparation. Young men are graduating from high school, building relationships with their children, and preparing for a future. Visit WWW.GBAPP.ORG to learn more.
If you know a young man who is about to become a father, please give him the support that he needs, whether it is encouraging him to finish his education, financial support for his child, surrounding him with positive male role models, or enrolling him in a program like GBAPPs. Every child deserves a father, so on this Father's Day, let's not forget about the teen fathers too.
