Writing
Every incoming first-year student is required to take the Writing Assessment. The purpose of the Writing Assessment is two-fold: to place students with the greatest needs into our Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) sections, and to obtain a baseline on students' writing skills in order to track progress throughout their Benedictine careers and thereby assess the quality of our Writing Program. Faculty is interested in developing students' writing skills throughout their education because it considers the ability to write well to be one of the key attributes of educated persons, whatever their eventual careers.

Foreign Language
The foreign language placement exam is required of all entering students who have taken courses in Spanish, French or Chinese, or who come from a home where one of these languages is spoken. This exam is necessary because a large number of majors include a language requirement that exceeds the entrance requirement. In order to ensure that students register for a language class at the appropriate level, the placement exam is necessary.
