I don't think yo actually understand the definition of pretentious, because if you did, you would realize how pretentious your comment was.

wow this is amazing ,what I found more amazing is that it seems to be in standard 4\4 time but has some amazingly crazy note groupings.

    Your comment is like saying.

The Space Shuttle is a little pretentious, especially when compared to a Chevy Impala.

    Both are forms of transportation...

Comparing them in order to denigrate the other isn't a valid argument, however. I can very easily say that Pat Metheny is a little pretentious, especially when compared to "acts" like Robert Johnson ( the blues musician ). Pat Metheny has songs that are "pretentious" and the Black Page #1 and #2 are classics you just don't like. *shrug*

Great string of posts here. Very valid points. While I can certainly understand why a person wouldn't like this kind of thing (I know I didn't at first), I think that people are too quick to condemn music that is technically challenging as pretentious.

Personally, I do feel it is a little pretentious, especially when compared to acts such as Pat Metheny, which reach enormous musical complexity, but at the same time convey some emotion and purpose through their music.

That said the silences between the notes are just as important, and I'm not suggesting that all music should be a barrage of notes. But when I say "craft" I mean the careful and thoughtful and cerebral creation of music (or art in general), and that can entail the use of minimalism. Needless to say, there's plenty of room for passion and expression in this too.
