BBC - White Girl - Part 8/9

This Bafta Award-winning provocative and emotive drama from the writer of Sex Traffic tells the story of the clash of cultures that occurs when a white family relocates from Leeds to an otherwise wholly Asian community in Bradford.

Abi Morgan's compelling film is told from the perspective of 11-year-old Leah, played by newcomer Holly Kenny, whose world is turned upside down when her mum Debbie (Bleak House's Anna Maxwell Martin) moves the family to Bradford to escape the fallout from her recent relationship break-up.

Leah becomes friends with her neighbour Yasmin and discovers that the culture she was initially intimidated by isn't so alien after all. She is soon seeking sanctuary in the rituals of Islam, away from the pain and strife at home. But this innocent fascination turns sour for Debbie when her daughter comes home wearing a hijab, and the family's violent reaction has explosive consequences for everyone.

when she says, "He promised, not Adam..." does that mean she knew, about him getting Leah to buy and sell drugs. Or was there something else going on as well.

Well you can see Leah delivering drugs for him at the beginning of the film at the fish n' chips shop. It's possbile her mom knew about it and made him promise not to make Adam do it as well. Why she'd let Leah do it in the first place is the question. It's probably because she lacked the courage to stand up to him, which you can see she finally manages to do by the end of the film.

@mjay22 exactly, what you said is 100% true, many white people (and even british born pakistanis) think islam is an "asian" or "arab" religion, im a white british-born bonsian, and my fellow white people dont understand how i can be muslim, and at the same time, even in Masjids, people look at me like i dont belong there, especially pakistani-dominatd Majids, im white british, bosnian decent, and Muslim!

Yet another P.C comment on how the native brits are drunk, violent, horny criminals and the muslem community is misunderstood. I'm not saying that this isn't the case sometimes I think the majority of muslem communities are very misunderstood, and unfortunatly many Brits do drink and fight, but for once can we see a drama which shows the other side of the coin? Sadly not all muslem communities are prepared to integrate and not all Brits are drunk, violent criminals either.

It seems that Leah's mom doesn't know the difference between a Muslim and associating it with being Arab or Pakistani. Islam is a universal religion practise by its followers, the Muslims, from across the globe - be it Whites, Blacks, Asians, Native of the Americas etc.

The translation : "there is no God but All-h" is really tricky. The more accurate translation would be:"there is only one god/allhh" All-h simply means god and moslems are technically not allow to spell the name of god. All-h is the arabic word for God and in Farsi we use a different word called "khoda" but Koran is in arabic so many people use the world All-h.
