There's a similar idea in the English idiom "6 of one, half a dozen of the other"
There are 16 兩 (taels/ounces) in a 斤 (catty) - so, 半斤 is pretty much the same as 八兩

Half Catty is the titled name for this song. It's a theme song from an old film called "The Priavte Eyes"
