if you use ubuntu or mint you won't need to learn any commands at all or do any tinkering.

    "it just works"

  • @sneekylinux ok ,sorry if it was impolite, i didn't know the reason.

  • @StarSoftStudios your choice, but keep in mind that distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint are meant (more or less) for people who don't have enough know-how to customize a Debian distro. Regular pc users just want an os that just works out of the box (nice ui, multimedia support, wi-fi, etc) without tinkering with the command line.

I think you get my point.

  • I've checked out Mint and Ubuntu distros so far, and they're both based on Debian, which I tried on a live cd the other day. Can't see the advantage of Ubuntu over Debian as I can customise Debian to my hearts content. What do you feel, would it be better just to add stuff I want instead of going with mint etc?

  • ok, i've been interested in linux for a while now, but something reallly bothers me. One big reason to using linux is that it's free. So you don't have to spend money on Windows or Mac or virus protection programs or other software/apps. For techno-savvy guys, they may enjoys tinkering with it, but for most people who want to get things done, they'd rather spend the money that helps them get things done easily rather than spend all the time learning commands and such.

  • i do you dont,do one,nuff said
