I really respect Nate's opinions, and he certainly knows what he's talking about. But when you're on an extremely limited budget, you don't ask yourself, "Is this table telling the story of who I am? Does this lamp represent what matters to me?" You ask yourself, can I afford this? Will it last more than a week before it collapses? Perhaps this snippet doesn't fully explain or represent the discussion you had. It seems a little pretentious.

I think those who have had negative comments about what he said have missed the point. What he is saying is Don't buy that red sofa because red is in this season. Buy that red sofa because the color red is comforting to you or it represents passion or something about you. You don't have to be rich to make it apply to you. It can apply to something you bought at walmart. If the feeling is there, if it speaks to you and you can afford it, buy it.

I understand what you are saying, but also understand where he is coming from. It isn't about money. OBVIOUSLY, you have to work within your budget. However, there are MANY options at equally as many price points. As your budget grows and your story changes your interior can grow if you choose. I have several things that I acquired when my budget was MUCH smaller than it is now, but have kept them because they are a part of me and my story. Some things have changed as has the story.
