The words "retard" or "retarded" hurt millions of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and friends. Across the United States and around the globe, people have joined a campaign to stop the hurtful and disparaging use of the word "retard" and pledge to stop using it.

Learn more about the damaging impact of the r-word by watching this video featuring Special Olympics Virginia advocates and three powerful skits created by drama students at Massaponax High School in Spotsylvania County.

Also, sign the r-word pledge by going to www.specialolympicsva.org/rword.

"I pledge that I will not use the words "retard" or "retarded" to mean "stupid." I understand this word is hurtful to kind, productive, inspirational people. I pledge to take responsibility for the power words have on others -- because we all have the power to open hearts and change minds."
