It was a burglary that went tragically wrong. Three shots were fired in a remote farmhouse in Norfolk. A 16 year old boy was killed, a burglar wounded and a farmer imprisoned. The crime turned an eccentric and reclusive loner, Tony Martin, into the unlikeliest of tabloid heroes.

In Real Crime: A Shot in the Dark, Mark Austin reveals what happened that night and how the repercussions sparked a national debate on self-defence.

With exclusive testimony from Tony Martin, interviews with his family and friends, insights from the professionals involved in the case, and access to police footage, the programme reveals the events that led to Tony Martins trial for murder.

  • My God what a dirty filthy slob he was. If only the burglars knew he was a dirty worthless slob

  • @teewoods I'd be a slob any day (it isn’t against the law) instead of being like the low life p-taking thieving scum that invaded his privacy.

  • Someone I once knew woke to find burglars in his house (this is in the UK)-one ran off and he caught and kicked the shit out of the other one, I mean really kicked the shit outta him. The police came, and an officer pulled him aside in private and said "you saw light glinting off something that you thought was a knife didnt you? You incapacitated him and then found that it was the bracelet of a silver watch" he said erm yeah....reasonable force no charges-seems the police agree

  • @bigpmc Yeah that's a little something called selective enforcement and it all depends on which policeman you deal with and their own personal views + a little bit of whether you come across as someone they like or not.

  • bleak house ! why would anyone go to bleak house for robbery...

  • @lajeclow111 They were bullying cowards picking on what they thought was a defenceless man who lived on his own (like they'd done so many times before with Mr Martin). I doubt they were really interested in stealing anything of worth.

  • Mr. Martin should have been given a medal for shooting this disgusting thieving gypsy filth its unfortunate the second gypsy burglar was not killed too and society would not have to support these thieving gypsy parasites!

  • 1:13 - 1:16! It was a simple burglary that went tragically wrong? He said that as if the criminal scum who invaded his home were actually allowed to steel his property and possibly subject him to violence. God this country has lost it's balls it really has.

  • I live in the next county over from this farmer and policing is VERY slow. People are burgled, beaten up and sometimes murdered and the police wait until the burglars leave until they come round. After this people have learnt to say over the phone 'dont worry I've shot him' for the police to quickly arrive. Not to arrest the burglar but on the idea that you could have shot someone. Utter nonsense

  • Fair play to Tony Martin these 3 scumbags got what they deserved in my opinion. If this happened in the USA the police wouldnt bat an eyelid, and the innocent guy who had been burgled 3 times before by the same group of people certainly would not have been sent to jail,

    Our country is a joke

  • Governments don't want their citizens to be able to defend themselves; they want them reliant upon the state for their every needs.

If a burglar comes into your house you should point blank be allowed to shoot them. If they die it's their own bloody fault.

  • God Bless America.

  • If you chose a criminal carrier, it can kill you. Why would anyone want to change that?

  • if he did that in the united states he would be a hero

  • if i find you in my house, you are going to die

  • Britain has been hijacked by a liberal elite who rule this country and deny people the right to protect themselves from a growing, lawless underclass.

  • Personally, I believe one should be allowed to do whatever is needed to incapacitate a burglar, including kill if it is necessary (i.e the burglars are armed). However, even if it wasn't necessary to kill them, I believe there should be no charges pressed for someone killing a burglar, as long as it can be proven that they were not welcome into the house (which is easy). Burglars should also have any and all rights while on the property voided.
