Ballistics gel test at a laser-measured 210 yards with the .223 Remington Hornady Superformance Varmint V-MAX, 53 grain. What better method for evaluating the performance of varmint ammo than at typical varmint hunting distances? Test rifle is the Bushmaster Varminter, 24" barrel. Brief pre-shot review, followed by full review of the bullet track, etc. from the 210 yard shot. I am using SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media, calibrated to the same specs as ordinance gelatin.

Filmed on remote private property with an ample backstop. I was the only person in the vicinity during this session.

Filmed with two Sony HD AVCHD camcorders; HDR-CX560 at 28 mbps 60p and HDR-CX110 at 24 mbps.

EDITING: Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10, MP4, 30p, 16 mbps.

  • Would you recommend this load for SHTF?

  • @Radion561

Pretty much anything in .223 is good for SHTF.

  • Is there any chance this could take a deer?

  • @katkid134

    Head shot.

  • @katkid134 hell even if you hit one in the heart it will still die, just won't bleed

  • I am a reloader and one of the bullets I load is the Hornady V-max 55gr. very excellent bullet and a great varminting round. I'd be curious to see how some other .223 bullets around the same weight compared to the V-max.

  • Nice I was wondering what to use on coyotes

  • @spartanjohn343 there is no way ppl hunt with 50 cals haha. unless they are just dicking around

  • Katkid 134..

No way I'd use this on deer.....at least not whitetails. Not enough penetration......a shoulder would stop this dead.

Love this ammo! Shoots into less than .75 inch @ 100 yds from my completely stock Remington Model 7.

  • @katkid134 I personally know ppl who have killed Deer with a .220 Swift with vitals shots. Idk the exact difference between a .223 and a .220 other than the .220 is WAY faster (approx 1000 ft/s faster). Personally I wouldn't hunt deer with anything smaller than a .243 just for the reason of a quick death.

  • Personally id like to see u get a 50 cal just cause some people hunt with them im interested in what it would do to the gel.

  • I really hope people aren't using any V-Max ammo for deer hunting. V stands for "varmint"!

  • Like it

    No

    Love it

    Yes

    More 223 plz

  • Why won't anything heavier than 50gr shoot through my 9:1 accurately? What ammo does the Military use? Probably heavier?
