Something goes wrong with the weld and molten metal gets sprayed to one side. Fortunately no one was injured (though the bristles of a sweeping brush were set alight!) This was the first of six welds to replace a single set of points near the Sheffield Cathedral Supertram stop on High Street. A lot of work had been necessary just to free the track from the road. The work was scheduled to be completed by 7 am Monday morning. I am informed that the method is known as 'thermite welding'.
