Hi Folks,
Its been a while since my last live session so I thought that I'd better get one up and this time instead of the Roland MC-909 I am using the Machinedrum & Virus.
So here we have a Minimal Techno House track, live improv produced by Ben Link using Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 MK2, Access Virus C, Korg Micro Kontrol, Korg Kaoss Pad 3 and Logic Studio Pro 8.
This was the second recorded take and is a little rough around the edges but when considering that, I was quite happy with the end result.
The Machinedrum is used for the drums and is sequencing itself, Logic Studio Pro is used for recording and sequencing the Virus C (controlled via micro kontrol) and for sending out the midi clock to both units. The KP3 is used for the effects and is on a send.

PS
My friend rang and almost messed my live session up. See if you can spot my phone in the first half of the track. HA HA.......

Watch in High Quality and enjoy.

  • Hey Ben,

on your other video you explained the midi routing to someone.

Can you maybe explain your audio routing?

Because sometimes the Virus goes through the KP3, sometimes the MD does.

    Or am I wrong?

And those faders on the Korg Micro Kontrol, are they giving Midi Commands ?

  • @fjl90 In this video the routing is pretty basic and old school, the MD and Virus go into my mixer(not shown) and the kp3 is on a send to both stereo channels on my mixer and then the mixer output goes into my input of my sound card (Motu 828mk3). The micro kontrol is setup as a logic control surface (controls faders etc) and enables me to bring in the midi parts from the virus, which logic is sequencing. Hope that helped.

  • I'm sorry if this comes across as critical..but, why do you need such expensive gear to make such minimal music?? I mean, seriously you could do all of this with a laptop or one hardware sampler. Seems like a VERY expensive hobby..but then again, if you are digging it..more power to you!!

  • @halation777

I can see your point as I have released many tracks with just my mac and trusty audio interface. But its not as fun as hardware or as spontaneous. I mean from the moment I had a go on a machinedrum I was hooked and if you've ever seen live sets with elektron gear as opposed to laptops with Ableton then straight away you notice how laptops just have not got as quality a sound, almost thin in comparison. Yeah you can use compressors etc. but the md sounds good right out of the box.

  • @BenLinkd The reason it sounds good right of the box is because of the built-in effects and compressors and such. But I agree it is really cool, so you did this with virus and machinedrum only, or what is the KP3?

  • @M3sslah

Yes i also used the kp3 (korg kaoss pad 3 dynamic effects sampler) but only as an effects box, like it states in the description. Thanks for commentiong and watching.

  • wooooooow <3

  • ur a master with the machinedrum, mate! any plans on getting the monomachine as well? i think it would fit you :)

  • Deep. Love it. Great performance :)

  • Good track, nice performance, awesome gear! Thumbs up!

Wish i could afford a Virus...

  • good job Ben.

  • Bought this machine, sampled it to death using an RME interface into Ableton, sold the Machinedrum . Same great quality less desk clutter, saved myself headache of running plugin drums into outboard compressors and back in during evrey mix and exposing it to audio latency

  • fuck yeah, man

    this is solid

  • Very very cooool ! as we say in french "de la balle.." ^^ cheers
