Optimism and Patient Safey - An Interview with John Cowell

An interview with Dr. John Cowell, member of the CPSI Board of Directors, and CEO of the Health Quality Council of Alberta. This was filmed in Vancouver at the July meeting of the CPSI Board of Directors by Dr. Malcolm Maclure, BC Academic Chair in Patient Safety.

About John Cowell, MD
Dr. Cowell became the Chief Executive Officer of the Health Quality Council of Alberta in January, 2003. From 1997 until 2003, he consulted on health policy and services and occupational health and safety. Throughout most of the 1990s, Dr. Cowell served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Workers' Compensation Board - Alberta. From 1981 until 1990, he was Vice President of Health, Safety and Environment for Nova Corporation of Alberta. In 1977, Dr. Cowell joined the Canadian General Electric Company as medical director. During his time at GE, he received extensive business management training through joint GE/Harvard University business management and development programs. From 1972 until 1977, he practiced Family Medicine in Toronto, Ontario.

Dr. Cowell grew up in Ottawa, Ontario and graduated from the University of Toronto with a MSc in 1967, and a Doctor of Medicine in 1970. He is certified in Occupational Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and also has certifications by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine. Dr. Cowell started practice in Toronto as a family physician with a part-time involvement in Occupational Medicine. In addition to his professional responsibilities, he is a clinical professor with the Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Calgary.
