NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan announced Thursday that Calgary forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond has been suspended for rest of preseason and one regular-season game for violating the NHL's re-written rule on boarding, which focuses more on the resulting contact with the boards rather than the point of contact.

Letourneau-Leblond delivered a hit from behind to Vancouver forward Matt Clackson 14:47 into the third period of the Flames-Canucks preseason game Tuesday. He was assessed an on-ice minor penalty for boarding.

"Letourneau-Leblond took a direct route toward Clackson, hit him squarely from behind into the boards and drove through the check high and hard," Shanahan said. "Clackson's back was turned toward Letourneau-Leblond well before the contract, requiring that Letourneau-Leblond avoid or minimize the check completely. He did neither."

Letourneau-Leblond is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement because he was suspended for one game on Oct. 9, 2010. Under the terms of the CBA, Letourneau-Leblond has to forfeit his salary based on the number of games in the season (82) instead of the number of days in the season (185).

He will forfeit $6,402.44 in salary and the money will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Letourneau-Leblond is eligible to return on Oct. 10 at St. Louis, Calgary's second game of the 2011-12 regular season.

  • Finally... Suspensions with teeth and we're not even out of the pre-season. I look forward to hearing how Shelley gets penalized for his dangerous hit.

Thanks Shanny! Bring the respect back to our game! ;)

  • @colinsjunkbin I have also uploaded the video for the Shelley incident.

  • I like that the league is putting out the reasons with clips ... I HOPE they do so when there is a marginal hit and they decide to NOT suspend someone. Hopefully the video clips will lead to a more consistent application of the rules. Bad check, good call but it is a marginal player/repeat offender. Time will tell ...

  • Illegal check plain and simple, can get a guy hurt like that easily

  • Thats a long ass name

  • @colinsjunkbin Yup, cause you know everyone wants no hitting in the NHL.

If players are afraid to hit because of the risk of being suspended and losing their paycheck, theres going to be less hitting, and less entertaining hockey.

  • I love these vids! I want to see hockey not brain damage!

  • @KelownaHomes247 I agree completely with that statement lol

  • @KelownaHomes247 you know I may be a Flyers fan but it's funny how ppl complain about their teams losing to Boston and Vancouver and the fact that Boston won and Vancouver lost. I think it's time to move on it's been what 3 months since that happen lets move on ppl and enjoy the 2011-2012 NHL Season!!

  • Theres gotta be consistency- thats always been the problem if anything this hit was a little dirtier than shelleys Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond goes right for the head while shelley at least hits the dude in the back (both dont belong regardless)

Shelleys suspension sent a good msg and set the bar - this suspension doesnt

  • Anyone interested on 50,000 pucks for $10 if you dont believe that i have the pucks ill make a vid :D

  • @ShamrunUnderscoreBof Not even that, but wait for the regualr season to start and they get bored of doing these videos and doing so many suspensions. They crack down every season and then ease up by the mid or later just in time for the free for all that are the playofffs.

  • Typical canucks fashion. At least in Toronto the team mate goes right after Shelley and sticks up for his teammate. Vancouver just pushes the guy a bit and asks them not to do that...exactly why they lost the cup...no grit or toughness!

  • This is weird...it's like shanahan is supreme ruler of hockey.
