    Winter terrarium I suggest you do not use salt or sugar. It will look fine for a time but if you have a humid environment, both will absorb moisture and eventually give you a lake. The sugar will grow all kinds of things once it dissolves. If you seal the terrarium so moisture will not get in, it will last longer. Sand is the best for the example being demonstrated.
