Nice simple tutorial, although I think this could be improved upon because this effect is very 2D and flat (Because of the flat white solid) - To get a more natural/organic look to the lightning effect and create the realism it would have been better to use some of the many colour correction effects and presets in After Effects, such as the curves adjustment, and possibly adding a feathered mask in particular places to get a more localized source of where the lightning fork was.
