We use gold because it does no harm the culture cells. Nerve cells called neurons are sensitive to metals (changes to the ph of medium will cause them to die). For example the gene gun uses tungsten particles as well as gold, but these nerve cells don't survive very long in the presence of tungsten. Once the gold is inside the cells the DNA comes off and is translated. The gold eventually is pushed out of the cell, term known as exocytosis.
