The American Dream in its most literal sense is a purely materialistic dream, personal fulfillment through property acquisition & status symbols. It leaves us forlorn (miserable and lonely), somnambulistic (literally sleepwalking), maniacal (mad, experiencing uncontainable emotional outbursts), in the dark .. (continuing the somnambulism idea..)
