Using a webcam, open-source motion detection software, and an arduino, I've created an automatic window closer for my bedroom windows. This is a demonstration of how it works.

you should use laser range detector (i believe that here is even a ready shield for like $150/ no need for computer) you point the laser far from your home and when train show up, arduino will detect that far away train is coming and by the time train is near your house windows will be already close

well done! People are free to do their own their own way, if they like.

More easy to talk, then build.

    I am an Arduino enthusiast.

Now add a drape closer for additional sound abatement. Great job man.

Those American trains are way too loud! They only drive like 20 mp/h and make a lot of noise, while in Europe trains do 100 and are silent.

You could improve it to control the temperature of your house, take some meseaurememts of the temperatures when you open or close the windows, put some sensors in and out the house and program it so it can regulate the temperature at the same time it avoids the noises of the train.

If the point is to keep out noise, wouldn't a mic be better than a laser for all noise sources.

A very very cool thing but... Its prety slow. The train has passed when it closed. So try to get a faster motor. Or u can take an rc servo. 10kg drag force wold be nice. If u have an rc servo u can close the window in 3seconds!

Sorry for my bad englis im swedish.

As I watched this video I thought, "What a boring project. Why not make something else instead like a a cool little robot?" But then when he showed the footage of that train going by. That would drive me absolutely bat shit crazy if I had to listen to that in the middle of the night. I would make that device too. Well done!

    Nice project.

Why not use different angle to detect train from a distance?

    Good Job!

Use a LM1881 and a RCA camera and your Arduino can do all the job.

I don't want to do a merchandising, but... Google for Video Experimenter, by Nootropic
