it looks through my soul

I used to feel the same about this movie. I actually didn't like it because I didn't 'get it'. Everything changed when I took a course in Soviet cinema at university. I had a great teacher who gave such beautiful insights in regards to this movie, that the next time I saw it, I cried :) I've been a huge fan ever since.
I know that doesn't help you much - I just wanted to share my story :)

@PiVi1962 Its so different that the words in use dont do justice to this master piece !
We have to comeup with a new word that defines art form as this...
A word instantly come to my mind is.......... Crap

Not only different eyes but different mind also or no mind at all!

Light years ahead of his time.

European+Persian mood
The Color of Pomegranates is the worst film I've ever seen. I made it through 15 minutes. I wanted to slit my throat. You can't call it a movie because it doesn't move. It is a succession of still photographs, each one remaining on the screen for 5 seconds. A shot of the ground, a shot of a window, a shot of a flower, a shot of a face, etc.. It's endless and tedious torture
Groundbreaking cinema? Anyone with a scanner and the rudiments of Final Cut Pro could assemble this disaster

I answer observing the story of another medium.
From medieval age up to early 20th century, painting has been all in the Giotto tradition. But then you had Cubism, Surrealism, Abstarct... Many artists found new ways of painting on canvas, telling completely different and new stories.
I think that with movies it's the same: 99% of the directors use the same language of story-telling of Méliès, the same language of the beginning of movies.

I would justaxpose "Sayat Nova" to Surrealism.
Look at the movie with different eyes, and I am sure you will find it an outstanding masterpiece.

Caravaggio was an assassin.
Michelangelo Buonarroti was omosexual.
Judge the art and not the artists.
