Contrary to conventional bone-screw based interbody fixation device (e.g. pedicle screw), the new device: LATERO, is innovative by not using bone screws to achieve high fusion rate. Also, it uses the least traumatic of lateral approach. LATERO uses an intravertebral plate to resist axial rotation, extension, and shear forces, which has been thought only possible by using bone screws. LATERO achieves high fusion rate (94%) and avoids much feared device-related complications, suchas nerve injry, infection, loosening, etc..
